So long Candy's

Today I got the sad news from one of my work collegues that Candy's was closing down today.  Candy's is one of my favourite cafes in Manly.  It has (or rather had because at the time of writing the doors will be closing for the last time) a wonderful comfy boho atmosphere.  Works from local artists donned the walls.  Bookshelves filled with an ecclectic range of books and games were placed throughout.  Mismatched tables and chairs with cushion.  Long bench seats along one side (the side where I took this photo from) were scattered with squashy comfortable cushions.  Sometimes when walking past you'd hear a local musician entertaining the patrons.  Food was vegetarian but far from boring.  I am rather a nostalgic person but am also a creature of habit.  My habit being returning straight home from work (do not pass go) and tidying up before the hoards (well ok 2 people but they can make the mess of thousands) get home.  Today I broke habit and went to Candy's for one last nostalgic coffee.  And to take a photo.  The new owners will be pulling the place apart tonight for a "modern new cafe" and I'm sure it will be nice.  But I will miss Candy's and it's books, music, art, soups and hot chocolate on cold Winter afternoons.

Ladies in black

Enough of the rain for the moment.  Last weekend we went to the Powerhouse Museum.  We wanted to see the 80's exhibition (I will post photos from that exhibition another day) but I also came across this fabulous fashion "behind the scenes" exhibit.  It was a lot of fun and made me realise that I would never be able to work in the fashion industry.  Way too stressful ;)  More photos.

A glimpse of sunshine.

Nothing much to say about this shot.  It was taken in Newtown not long after I took the photo in yesterday's post.  I just liked the way the sun broke through the clouds and shone on the building in the background.

A little colour for an otherwise grey weekend.

Driving into Newtown for some Chinese we saw this beautiful rainbow along the way.  I just had to take a photo of it as were approaching the bridge.  It certainly made the grey wet weather we've been having lately a little brighter.  You can see another photo I took here.

Food glorious food.

Every Friday night all through Summer and Autumn there has been a food market in Manly outside the Council Chambers.  Great atmosphere, great food and some good music.  Perfect way to end the working week.  However tomorrow night I won't be there.  I'm cooking up a storm at home and having some friends over for my own little food and wine festival.

A little art for a rainy day.

One of the interesting sculptures near Circular Quay.  Those of you in Sydney would know that I didn't take this photo today.  I would not have ventured out in the constant downpour.  I took this about a month ago.  Tomorrow I'm hoping for clear skies so I can go out in my neglected garden and rake up the leaves.

Monday Musings. Autumn ! Bring on the hot chocolate!

Autumn is upon us.  Well to be exact I think we're nearing the end of it.  It was a little slow coming in at first.  The trees took their time putting on their Autumn blush.  But in late April almost overnight the trees in my neighbourhood burst into glorious colour.  The heat has finally abated and Autumn weather fully arrived about a week ago.  Cosy nights in front of the heater (much to my cat's joy), hot milo and chocolate biscuits after school pick up, and Winter fashion have started.  I used my new scarf that I bought back in January for the first time this morning.  I love love love Autumn!  I even love raking the leaves in the back yard.

Welcome Back Jessica!

I went to Manly today to see if I could catch a glimpse of Jessica Watson sail through North and South Head on her journey home from her solo sail around the world.  Unfortunately I had to leave to take my daughter to a birthday party, but I did catch the action on the tv (which is where I got the photo - yes I took a photo of my tv), and I also got a shot of a welcome sign on a Manly ferry.  There were so many boats on the harbour today that it would have virtually been impossible to spot her little pink boat without binoculars or a camera without a decent zoom (which my phone has not).  It was still quite emotional watching this determined Queensland girl achieving her dream even if was on the tele and not seeing her live.

Well doesn't time just fly when you're distracted by the trials of life!  Here am I thinking I haven't posted anything for week or two and lo and behold I find it's been a month!
I haven't sorted through my latest photos yet so I'll post a photo I took previously of my favourite characters  at one of my favourite haunts.  The meerkats at Taronga Park Zoo.  I love the zoo.  We are zoofriends which means for a yearly membership fee we can go as often as we like, get discounts on parking etc.  Sometimes we just go for picnic lunch or a short walk around if there's nothing else to do.  And we don't have to queue to get in.  Brilliant.
