2004 holiday fondly remembered.

The last stop on this particular holiday was back in Zurich with our beautiful in laws.  I wish I could travel every year like the lucky and talented Virginia, but alas our trips must be confined to every 3 - 5 years.  Never mind.  I am lucky to have traveled - I know many people who haven't.
Beautiful early Spring tulips in my sister in law's garden
I've had such fun skipping down memory lane while going through these photos.

I wonder where my 2007 photos are....................

Paris - What more do I need to say?

I love this photo taken on a busy Friday night in St Germaine De Pres

This is proof that I was actually there.  I like to look at it every now and then just to remind myself.

The Louvre.  The most fun I had getting lost.

And of course good ol' Notre Dame.  Strangely I never took any photos of the Eiffel Tower........

Lenzburg Castle - Dragons and mysterious echos.

"Echo" lives down here.

Lenzburg Castle in Switzerland.  A fun day exploring yet another fantastic castle.  According to legend a dragon lived on the mountain and was defeated by two knights who were then allowed to build a castle on the site.  My daughter was intrigued by this well and had visitors entertained as she was trying to find the echo.

A day in isolation is a good thing.

The Landesmuseum just behind the Hauptbahnhoff in Zurich.  I spent an entire day walking the corridors all by myself.  Surrounded by history and solitude.  Bliss.
(the link for the Hauptbahnhoff is in German - sorry)

More happy holiday memories - Bellinzona. Castles and ghosts.

My little one - then 2 - peering through an opening in a castle we visited in Bellinzona in 2004.  She had no idea of the history she was surrounded by.  She was only interested in climbing absolutely everything (as a two year old does).  That was an interesting part of our holiday.  We stayed in a hotel which turned out to be haunted.  I think daughter and I were visited by the pesky ghost on our overnight stay there.

The simple things in life make for the best memories.

Lake Maggiore, Ascona 2004
Wow blogger is letting me post photos again.
This is what I wanted to post a couple of days ago when I was feeling whimsical about past holidays.
It was early Spring (early Autumn in Australia) in 2004.  Hubby, then 2 year old daughter, belli sister in law and brother in law were sitting at a cafe in Ascona, on the Swiss/Italian border, drinking coffee and talking and laughing.  Later my daughter and I sat on the shore of Lake Maggiore, made daisy chains and sang the alphabet song.  A perfect day.
I took this photo because I love the (almost) symmetry of these trees.

Visitor no show + unco-operative blogger = hobby time.

I received the bad news this morning that my father and his partner can't come for their visit due to illness.  I hope that all is ok - and at least my house is sparkling.  Just must now convince the hoards (both of them) to keep it that way.
Blogger is still for some reason not letting me post photos.
Annoying.
Off to research family tree then.

Thoughts of holidays fill my mind

Reading my friends comments about the fun she is having in Los Vegas led me to muse over my past holidays.  I don't have too much happening in my life apart from frantic cleaning and work so I thought I'd post some snaps from happy hols of the past for the next few days - until my pre house guest panic subsides :)
However I seem not to be able to post photos.
Maybe tomorrow?

I need a holiday.

Feel like I can't do much right at work.
Hubby angry at his company's move to the city and taking it out on his family.
House and yard still in utter chaos and house guests have given us the 'good news' that they will be arriving three days early.
And I bought 3 beautiful antique bowls at a market on Saturday, dropped the bag and broke 2 of them.
I need to take out my frustration on something before my head explodes.

I'm off to make some sauce verte!

A flash of inspiration from the sick bed.

A beautiful swan I photoed in Switzerland.  Travel is on the agenda.
Yesterday I had plenty of time to think as I writhed about on my sick bed.
I spend 98% of my time being mother, housewife and working woman and spend very little time doing things that make my heart sing.  In fact I can't remember the last time my heart belted out a tune .  So much of my day is taken up with what needs to be done, be it at home or at work.
I realised I must change.  I need to take some time for myself so I can then be happy with time spent on my most important job - being a mum.
I picked up a book I fell in love with recently but have taken ages to read because I'm always too busy doing things that I think are important - but will only need doing again tomorrow (housework being the number one soul killer here).  It spoke of having a hobby and learning a language ( Italian being the example) and I took it as a sign.  I saw the phrase "La Bella Lingua" (the beautiful language) in the book and by chance I happen to have another book by that name.  It's about the Italian language, so  I started it last night when the aching subsided enough.  There's 2 things I love right there - reading and learning Italian.  I am in love with all things Italian (and French) and am cross with myself for letting the unimportant things get in the way of my passion.
Another thing I love is knitting.  My mother taught me when I was a girl and I used to make the loveliest garments.  I have a basket full of patterns and a list of requests from my family so I picked up the needles today and started on some gloves.
Tonight I looked at the box of old documents and photos I gathered when I started researching my family tree.  I am going to finally put them in order.
There are other things that make my heart sing.  Drawing, traveling, dancing, I could go on.  Things I've started but never did anything with.  However I don't want to overdo things and overload myself.  So I'll start with the Italian study, knitting, and family tree.
I feel a tune coming on.................................

In sickness and in gratitude .

I am very very sick today. Was struck with very sudden and very severe gastrointestinal pian and vomititg last night. Every inch of my body was in pain. So of course I must be grateful.
1. That it didn't kill me though at one point I prayed for death.
2. That the worst of it is over.
3. For my friend who is filling in for me at work today.
4. For my other friend who took my daughter to school this morning.
5. Pain killers! God knows how I would cope without drugs today!
6. Hubby's iPad. So I can blog from bed.

I'm weeeeeeeding in the rain!

Another cold wet windy day.  Apparently we're in for a month of this weather.  Still I was determined to get some more gardening done today (even though the little voice inside my head kept whispering "stay inside, curl up on the couch under a blanket and nap").  With my dad coming to visit in a little less than 2 weeks I need to get a move on with making this house visitor ready.  The back yard is still a war zone after the laying of the pipes and fence repair a couple of months ago.  Unfortunately the weather isn't permitting me to get out there often so the clean up progress is slow.  I haven't even considered what I'm going to do about landscaping yet as it seems so far away.
Uncovered  memory of daughter's fairy garden
I managed to get a corner done about 6 weeks ago but nothing since.
So today - regardless of pouring rain - puppy and I were out clearing rubbish, raking, trimming and weeding.  I actually got a fair bit done without being blown away.  AND because it was raining I didn't have nosy neighbour peeking over the fence.
However I badly need a manicure now.

Monday Musings - Melancholy Madness

An old friend just phoned me in great distress because she had missed my birthday.  The funny thing is is that I didn't even notice that she had missed it.
How strange our view of our date of birth becomes as we get older.  I remember being so excited about it.  Coming home from school and seeing balloons and birthday banners everywhere that my Mum had so painstakingly hung about the place.  I see the same excitement in my daughter's eyes as she plans her birthday party every year.
My oldest friend forgot to call and I didn't even notice.  Not that I'm in any way upset with my friend. She is a very busy mum of two, studying full time.  What struck me is that I thought so little of  my birthday that I didn't notice an absence of a phone call.  Maybe it's because in the Facebook age most of my family choose to communicate with me that way (there were quite a few happy birthday messages there when I looked later) so I no longer expect a call, or maybe I'm just so over birthdays that I deliberately don't think about it.  I'm not really sure.  All I know is that with each birthday I'm reminded that I'm getting older and I still haven't done any of the things I always said I'd do.
I thought about this as my friend was wringing her heart out over the phone.
Am I getting unnecessarily philosophical or am I just bored with routine.
I decided the only thing to do was to go shopping.

These little things happen.

Unfortunately, due to a malfunctioning keyboard, I am unable to post today.  I wanted to update on the live cattle export to Indonesia debate, but am using hubby's computer.  He is waiting impatiently as he needs to kill mutant robot spawn goblins (or some such thing) right now!
So I will have to wait until tomorrow.
Life is full of these little mishaps.

Monday Musings - Is My Life a Treadmill? Must Consult my List!

Original at Note Couture
I feel like I was running a hundred miles an hour and going no-where today.  My work has moved to a new office and for the last week we've been trying to organise it.  I have made so many lists that I now need a list to keep track of all my lists.

Does that even make any sense?

Maybe a database of all my lists on my desktop would be the answer.  That way if I need to check what's next on my list I open my database, locate the lists of lists, find the list I want, check what's next on my list, and once the job has been completed go through the process again to check the item off my list.  I could even cross reference and colour code them!

Or maybe I could just dang it all and head to the spa........
